Since becoming a full time sculptor, I have discovered that my inspirations are diverse. Often elemental, I am constantly trying to create tension, movement and a feeling of inner power and strength, life force. More recently I have been exploring the mystical and extraordinary. Also, I enjoy researching ancient beliefs and finding the universal connections to our own times.
Following a BA (Hons) in Theatre Design and 2 years at the BBC, I ran my own design and prop making company.
Then, in pursuit of my dreams of working in film, I spent 8 years in London as a commercial sculptor. I worked in many incredible workshops producing sculpture for a diverse range of projects. Movies, Theatres, Museums and Theme Parks. Clients include Tussauds, Disney, The National Trust, and Shepperton Studios where, amongst other things, I made the armour for Russell Crowe in Gladiator.
I loved the fast paced environment and the incredible range of different work. One week I might be working on a portrait bust of Second World War General for a museum in Sicily, the next carving a full size Easter Island head with a chain saw, out of Polystyrene for Euro Disney. An experience never to be forgotten.
Today I work mostly in clay,(I mould, cast and finish everything myself.) although I have quite recently come to sand carving. The two styles of working and scale could not be further apart throwing up incredible challenges. Its good to scare yourself sometimes!
